Journal: 12 September 2024

Hello reader

This is my first one of these, so apologies in advance for my poor blogging skills. While I have done some writing in my 37 years, most of it was squirrelled away in journals, never to see the light of day. I'd like to change that.

A little background. I stumbled onto a blog post a while back by Jason Velazquez, aka fromjason.xyz, called Where have all the websites gone? That post got me thinking about the personal internet and got me interested in getting more substance out of my online experiences. Historically, those experiences have mainly consisted of browsing reddit subs or reading trending news articles. Coming across Jason's post got me thinking that maybe there is a more substantial web than the one I was used to.

I checked out some of the sites that Jason included in his post, and they were great. I primarily spent time clicking around The Cheap Web, which was pretty illuminating as to the world of substance online that is not widely publicized, or at least I had not been made aware of its existence, until reading Jason's post.

In the months following, I altered my online activities only slightly, discovering some more blogs and cool websites and sticking them in my "Quality sites" folder. Whenever I got bored with my typical regimen of online content, I would go and take another look at the cheap web, and generally come away from the experience happy to have done so. It wasn't until a few months later, when reading Jason's most recent post, Raw dog the open web! that things really clicked.

At around that same time, I checked in on another online person who I've come to appreciate, Jason Kottke, who made a post about The TinyAwards. From there I clicked the Diagram Website link, and from there, the Personal Web link, thus being pointed to Exploring the Personal Web. Between Jason's posts, oh shit they're both named Jason aren't they. Between the Jasons' posts, I ended up tumbling headfirst down the open/personal web rabbit hole.

That was a few weeks ago and now you're reading this post on my very own personal website. Oooh first time linking my site, nice. Ok, I gotta go to bed. It's night time on the internet. That is a Pod F. Tompkast reference...thanks for reading,

-Ty
